Non-negotiable rule for Paper 2B
This paper is not “unseen prose”. It is a shared-contexts paper: one set-text essay (Section A) plus two Section B answers using the Insert, all from one chosen option.

Rubric trap: If they do not answer both Section B questions, they cap the paper badly. Section B is two-thirds of the marks.

- Q1 (Insert): close analysis of the extract, focusing on how the writer shapes meanings about the named concept/theme.
- Q2 (Linking): compare the concept/theme across two other studied texts from your option, making explicit connections.

Bottom line: If students do “beautiful AO2” but no argument (AO1), they don’t hit the top bands.
Section B (Insert) – what markers reward
Q1 Insert answer (25 marks)
- AO1 (7): a clear argument about the concept/theme, driven by the writer’s choices.
- AO2 (6): voice, perspective, syntax, imagery, tone, structure, pacing.
- AO3 (6): modern-times context as values/pressures shaping meaning.
- AO5 (3): ambiguity, tension, alternative interpretation of motives/voice.
- AO4 (3): not the main focus in Q1, but you can still make small connections to the wider text if relevant.
Q2 Linking answer (25 marks)
- AO4 matters more here: explicit connections across the two studied texts are the point of the question.
- Keep your comparisons writer-led: “Writer A shapes X by…” then “Writer B shapes X by…”
- AO5 is often the easiest win: give two alternative readings across the comparison.
Rule that fixes most weak answers: write about what the writer is doing, not what the characters “are doing”.

How to approach the Insert (your step-by-step method)
Step 1
- Underline the key words in the question (concept/theme words especially).
- Check writer + date (publication) on the Insert.
- Write one context note linked to the date that could matter (gender roles, class, post-war, consumerism, migration, etc).
Step 2: Read for meaning (annotate)
- What relationship / conflict is being staged?
- Who has power and how do we know?
- What changes by the end of the extract?
Step 3: Read for method using V-I-S-P
V – Voice & perspective (distance, bias, reliability, 1st/3rd, omniscient?)
I – Imagery & repeated motifs (symbols, recurring words, patterns)
S – Shift (contrast, turning point, change in tone/focus)
P – Pace (control, interruption, fragmentation, sentence length)
Step 4: Thesis + plan
- Write a thesis that answers the question and includes tension (but / yet / however).
- Plan 3 paragraph points. Put two quotations under each point.
- Number paragraphs for best order: strongest opening, strongest ending.
- Add 1–2 context points only if they support a paragraph claim.
Step 5: Write 3–4 paragraphs using the paragraph structure
- Every paragraph begins with a claim about what the writer is doing.
- Do not retell the story. Analyse writing choices.
- Build in at least 2 “Alternatively…” moments across the whole answer (AO5).
Step 6: Check (fast but ruthless)
- All paragraphs are writer-led (not character-led summary).
- Context is relevant and used to explain meaning, not dumped.
- AO5 is visible: at least two alternative readings.
